Statement: Bernard Gaynor resigns from Katter’s Australian Party over abortion silence

I have today resigned from Katter’s Australian Party because its leadership has failed to live up to the values of the party.

Katter’s Australian Party’s constitution states that “laws concerning children must be made in the best interests of children”.

As every abortion takes the life of a child, the party cannot be silent on this issue. It must defend life, especially when called upon to do so in the media and by like-minded parliamentary colleagues.

Yesterday, Bob Katter made it clear his party does not have a position on abortion.

By his silence, he has become part of the abortion problem, not part of the solution. His actions support the culture of death, rather than oppose it.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time the party leadership has acted contrary to the values it purports to represent.

Katter’s Australian Party has a serious problem in that many of its federal election candidates privately support gay marriage or civil unions.

Because Bob Katter refused to listen to my warnings last year over the values of certain candidates, he is stuck with a senate team campaigning for gay marriage under his family name.

This means Katter has established a party little different to the ALP and LNP, and which has already cowered to placate the Green’s radical agenda.

Bob Katter is now a different politician than the one who declared his support for the institution of marriage two years ago.

It was because of his previous leadership that I joined his party. It is now because of his leadership that I leave.

I respect the work that Bob Katter has done on economic issues. The problems he addresses are vital to the future prosperity of Australia. However, economic settings are underpinned by moral and social values.

Politicians will never address the financial attack on families from free-market economic policies while they fail to address the social attack on families from free-market morality.

In leaving, I wish to thank the many party members who helped win the fight to protect my membership. I suggest they now look at other political options and support strong leaders, such as DLP Senator John Madigan.

I also wish the party leadership the very best and hold no ill-will, only disappointment. In particular, I wish to mention Rob Katter and Aidan McLindon. I hold both men in very high regard and pray they will be strong first, and successful second.
