Absolute tolerance (or Jihad is the future…)

I read Jihad Dib’s maiden speech today. He was elected as the Member for Lakemba at the 2015 New South Wales election and became the first person to swear their allegiance on the Koran before entering that state’s Legislative Assembly.

There were two striking things about Jihad’s speech.

Firstly, he noted that Lakemba has the highest proportion of people under 24 in New South Wales. As such, Lakemba will change New South Wales more than any other electorate over the next century. That’s because democracy reflects demography, and Lakemba holds all the trump cards in that field.

As they say, you have to be in it to win it and Lakemba is in it in a bigger way than anywhere else.

The second striking point of Jihad’s maiden speech was this quote:

“We all bear the responsibility to promote acceptance at any cost”.

Jihad might be a nice Muslim guy, but most Australians would disagree with this. Acceptance at any cost was not the cry in World War One. Or World War Two.

It should not be the cry now that we are fighting the Islamic State either.

  1. Bernard, I received an email from Caritas (to whom we donate twice a year) They were specifically asking that we send a “love letter” to Malcolm Turnbull to do something about climate change in Paris. There was other stuff too, eg. some march that was coming up. I must say we were very disappointed with this email and have unsubscribed to Caritas. I thought they were all about helping people less fortunate than ourselves. We are in shock.

  2. As a pensioner I can’t afford to donate as much as I would like and have already donated a small amount.
