Show us a sign, they cried

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the last apparition of Our Lady of Fatima.

Many will never have heard of this. Most may dismiss it as nonsense.

But I do not. And anyone who cares to investigate this story even briefly cannot deny that there is something mysterious about it.

One hundred years ago today, 70,000 people crowded into a paddock in Portugal.

Some may have come from devotion. Others out of sheer curiosity. And some came to write newspaper articles.

But came they did and it was all because three children with stories of regular monthly visions on a farm in Portugal had captured their attention.

They claimed that they were visited by the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of Christ. And on October 13, 1917, she was going to give a sign that the apparitions were real.

That is why there was a crowd. They were waiting for the sign. Or they were waiting to laugh.

A Portuguese newspaper recorded the events:

From the top of the road, where the carriages were parked and where many hundreds of people stood who lacked courage to step in the mud, one could see the immense crowd turning toward the sun, which appears free from all clouds and at its zenith. The sun resembles a dull, silver plate and itis possible to look at it without the least effort. It does not burn, nor blind. It seems as if an eclipse is taking place. But then an immense clamor erupts, and one can hear the spectators who are closer, shouting:

“Miracle, Miracle! A Marvel! A Marvel!”

Before the dazzled eyes of the people—whose emotion takes us back to biblical times and who are fearfully pallid, their gaze fixated upon the blue sky as the sun pulsates [with] never-before-seen tremulous movements, defying all laws of gravity—the sun danced, according to the typical expression of the peasants.

Portuguese newspaper, O Seculo, reporting on the events at Fatima two days later.

Whether you are a believer or a sceptic, something happened in that little field 100 years ago today.

Earlier in 1917, Our Lady of Fatima warned the three children that Russia would spread its errors throughout the world. Just 25 days after this event, Lenin’s revolutionaries took control of Russia and imposed Communism.

She also promised that the First World War would end but warned that another, greater war would follow it.

And she told the children that:

“the final battle between the Lord and the reign of Satan will be about marriage and the family. Don’t be afraid because anyone who operates for the sanctity of marriage and the family will always be contended and opposed in every way, because this is the decisive issue.”

This prediction is similar to others made in Marian apparitions. Just over 300 years earlier, Our Lady appeared to a nun in Ecuador and told her:

“Thus I make it known to you that from the end of the 19th century and shortly after the middle of the 20th century…the passions will erupt and there will be a total corruption of morals…

As for the Sacrament of Matrimony, which symbolizes the union of Christ with His Church, it will be attacked and deeply profaned. Freemasonry, which will then be in power, will enact iniquitous laws with the aim of doing away with this Sacrament, making it easy for everyone to live in sin and encouraging procreation of illegitimate children born without the blessing of the Church…

In this supreme moment of need for the Church, the one who should speak will fall silent.”

In today’s world where the supernatural is regarded with contempt, it is not easy to stand up and proudly declare your belief in it.

But I do believe that Our Lady appeared at Fatima. I do believe that the attack on marriage is diabolical in its nature.

And I do believe that the Blessed Virgin Mary is the woman announced in Genesis who will crush the head of the serpent. She is God’s most perfect creation and she is also our help and protector.

  1. In her July 13 appearance to the shepherd children of the Serra (ages 7, 9 and 10 years), Our Lady showed to them visions of the last ends of man. One of those visions was the vision of hell.

In our era, of course, the idea of hell as a metaphysical reality is passé.

Saint Padre Pio the stigmatised priest of the 20th century was once challenged on this point by a woman who told him frankly: “I don’t believe there is a hell”. Padre Pio just replied: “You will when you get there.”

In her memoirs, Lucia dos Santos, then a sister of Carmel wrote of her little cousin Jacinta, aged 7 years. The reality of hell deeply penetrated her soul wrote Sr Lucia. Often she would just stop what she was doing and say: “Hell. Why? Why would people go there?”

There may be an answer to this question in our time.

  2. Bernard, I appreciate your courageous stand against what at times must seem like overwhelming odds.

As a Baptist I do not want to get into any theological differences we might have. The Word of God records the statement in both Matthew and Luke. “Show us a sign” Jesus responds:

    Luke 17:26-27
“Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.

    Luke !7:28-29
“It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.

Note the Noah-reference includes ‘marrying’ while the chronologically-later Lot reference, has no mention of ‘marrying’, rather’buying and selling, planting and building’. Sounds like 2017.

Two (of the many) other ‘sign-of-the-times’ Bible references:
Romans 1 (all) prophetically describes the sorry state of the world in 2017

Revelation 3:14 (onward) prophetically describes the sorry state of the church in 2017.
Two citations, picking up on your good work:

  3. In her appearance to the shepherd children of the Serra de Aire near the village of Fatima, Portugal on July 13 1917 Our Lady confided to them: ” The war is going to end
[ WWI ] but if people do not stop offending God a worse war will break out during the reign of Pius XI. When you see a night illumined by an unknown light know that this is the great sign given you by God that he is about to punish the world by means of war, famine and the persecutions against the Church and the Holy Father.”

NB – My grandparents remembered very well the night of Jan. 25-26 1938, the ‘night of the great aurora’ which (covered the entire Northern hemisphere down to latitudes like the 34th parallel in which auroras are never seen. Sky blood glowed red all night. Reported in all Western newspapers. My grandmother told me no one could sleep it was so bright. As it was bright enough to see all night they sat out on the porch and played cards. And this occurred during the reign of Pope Pius XI 1922-1939.

Our Lady continues ” To prevent this I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart and the Communion of Reparation on the First Saturdays. If my requests are heeded, Russia will be converted and their will be peace, if not Russia will spread her errors throughout the world causing wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will be martyred and the Holy Father will have much to suffer. Various nations will be annihilated.”

Russia was defeated in WWI but after the Bolsheviks seized power in 1917, Russia under the Soviet became the first officially atheistic nation in the history of the world as stated in their constitution. The Supreme Soviet imposed many laws that today are commonplace and even considered to be ‘rights’ throughout the Western World. As Canadian researcher Henry Makow (not a Christian) clearly documents week after week on his website the entire Western world has become Communist according to the objectives set out in the Marxist Plank for the achievement of Communism (formally adopted by the U.N.). Here’s his post for Oct 13 2017

    World War II – tick
Persecution of the Church – tick
This has been and is a condition occurring from without and systemically from within.
Holy Father has much to suffer – tick
Russia has spread her errors throughout the world – tick
And as the consecration to Russia has not been done….tick tock. tick tock….

In the most interesting development so far, Russia has recovered from 80+ years of Sovietisation and is becoming a Christian ethnostate and is rumbling with the Communist West in the Ukraine and in Syria.

  4. For those who realize that Our Lady Help of Christians can help us preserve the traditional definition of marriage in law in Australia.

In Brisbane, Saturday: Oct 14, 2017 at 7 pm is the candlelight procession of Our Lady of Fatima from St Stephens’ Cathedral through the streets of Brisbane in honour of her Oct 13 1917 appearance at Fatima, the miracle of the sun and the three confidences she shared with the shepherd children of the Serra da Aire.

  5. I have always accepted the teachings of Catholicism all my life.Unfortunately it looks like our current Pope is the one referred to here..God help us if there is no change in the direction at the very top.
With you Bernard all the way.
    God bless.

I am not surprised by the comments of your first two commentators, Bill and Brendan. As far as I understand the bible represents the old testament and written prior to Christ. The new testament came after.
For me I have not been to Fatima but fully intend visiting there when I can. But my parish church was named after Our Lady of Fatima as we had a Parish Priest had been to Fatima and studied the events in detail 60+ years ago.His experiences were compelling.
I have been to lourdes and Neves in France. It was in Neves we experienced a reaction I had never had before. To see Bernadette in a glass case with body fully in tact after 4 separate examinations of her body, a beautiful young lady.
There have been many try to discount it, but mummification is not too unusual but fully intact bodies are not so.
In our party of six there were 4 serious sceptics .All came away with a different view.

  6. Thank you for the refresher as I have always followed this and followed Sister Lucy also. But I did not know what was said about marriage!

  7. Bernard, I am an atheist, so I do not accept any of the above as factual. Anymore than I accept god, jesus, the devil, the virgin mary, or anything that goes bump in the night.

Oh, I used to, having been raised in the catholic religion. But the years take their toll, and as a person with a forensic bent, I came to the conclusion that I could no longer accept any of.

And being a sceptic, makes it that much harder to accept any of this nonsense.

See Bernard, there is no proof that any of this exists. None whatsoever. Your bible wasn’t written until well after the supposed crucfixion. Roman records were actually very well kept, but there is no record of a jesus being crucified. And had this jesus existed and upturned the tables of the moneylenders in the church, he would have been branded a criminal and beheaded. Crucifixion was reserved for what we might call the upper class.

Please don’t take me the wrong way Bernard. I respect and support your right to believe, and to speak about your beliefs. In fact I went to war to defend those rights. Well at the time that’s what I thought I was doing.

    Cheers friend

    • Healthy scepticism is all it takes. None of the so called predictions of Mary were particularly outstanding. Many people predicted the Russian Revolution and understood that, once it was in place, would take a long time to displace. Predicting wars is like predicting the sun coming up! As for the dancing sun, this is what mass hysteria does. Is there a videotape of the sun dancing? Why not? Motion picture cameras were available at the time to film such events. Fortunately, unlike some mass hysteria events and supernatural nonsense, this one probably didn’t do much harm.

      • Brendan, there you have it! Some people NEED proof and other simply have faith! The believers obviously didn’t think they needed to take a video of the event to prove to dis-believers..why? Because no matter what proof they took, a non believer still will be just that! He feels safer knowing something doesn’t exist rather than the fear that is could in fact be real!
I guess there will always be 2 sides and you have chosen which side you believe! We honestly don’t need to debate this topic because we sit at the feet of 2 very different philosophies or beliefs!

    • One thing the Romans could do was write history and keep legal and administrative records.

Their histories might have been polemical, but the Roman historians served the vision of Rome. They certainly took sides and argued pro and contra for this or that reading of historical events but they employed the principle: contra factum non est argumentum – even against Caesars and emperors.

This is part of the great legacy of the West – a legacy now completely in peril with the wholesale abandonment of classical reason and the enforcement of subjective political correctness.

In the matter of the great fire, the Roman Tacitus is on record against the party line from the Senate and the Nero party. His disdain for the official conspiracy theory is virtually engraved on the famous 9-11 of antiquity – an event we would today call a ‘black op’.

Here is Tacitus delivering the Roman version of ‘do the math’ on the difference between the melting temperature of steel and the burning temperature of jet fuel. And twitting the emperor for neglecting to set up the patsy and resorting to ‘show trials’. Too late, too late according to the great Roman…

      Annals 15.44

“But not all the relief could come from man, not all the bounties the prince could bestow, nor all the atonements that could be presented to the gods availed to relieve Nero of the infamy of being believed to have set up the conflagration, the fire of Rome. Hence to suppress the rumour, he falsely charged with guilt and punished the Christians, hated for their enormities. Christus, the founder of the name was put to death by Pontius Pilate, the procurator of Judea in the reign of Tiberius. But the pernicious superstition repressed for a time broke out again, not only through Judea where the mischief originated, but in Rome itself…”

    • Hey Bill, your letter was respectful. I trust mine will also be. Your statements are factually incorrect. Read Josephus, a Jewish historian. Read archaelogy. The evidence for Christ is beyond argument. It is beyond argument. What year is it? 2017AD…read a history book. You may well reject catholic dogma, a lot of it is rubbish, but Jesus Christ changed the world like no other and he loves us. John 3:16. Thx Tony

    • Sorry Mr Meiers, you are incorrect. During the time of Tiberius only the privileged (read Roman Citizens) were entitled to the quick death offered by beheading.

The humiliation and agonies of scourging and of crucifixion were reserved for slaves and convicted criminals of non citizens of Rome.

This is all well evidenced, as is the historical evidence for the crucifixion of Jesus by both Joshephus (Jewish Historian) and the writings of Tacticus.

      • Well said Butto. I am over these know all philosophical biblical theologians who focus on trying to dis-prove the evidence before them instead of accepting it! A true scholar listens to the facts and historical account of those who were there!
Why would Romans’ want to document a man who had such an impact with his followers and disciples and threatened the power of Rome!
The truth was and still is being told from generation to generation of believers.

    • Bill, firstly I want to say Thank You for serving on behalf of all of us and for that alone you have my respect!
I however disagree with your assumption, that because events did not happen the way you think they would have in that time…does not mean it did not happen!
IIf the bible..and God..and Jesus…and the thousands of other witnesses who passed these accounts down generation to generation were on crack and none of this is real…how do you explain the remains found on Mount Sinai of reminents of the ark?
How do you explain the Ten Commandments that the laws of every nation follows to keep society in moral control?
How do you explain prophesies that are included in the end of the bible in the book of Revelations that has either been fulfilled already or is happening now or will come to pass soon?
How do you explain knowledge 2000 years ago from simple farmers/disciples who wrote about the end of this world and how it will end! How did they know about a numbering system that will be placed on either your forehead or your right hand? That is happening right now! How did they know about an economic crash that will bring the wealthiest nations to its knees? How did they know about a New World Order? How did they know about a One World Religion that will come to pass? How did they know about nations rising up against nations, children disrespecting and rising up against their parents/elders, how did they know a third of the stars will fall from the sky and it will be darker, how did they know about wars, famine, plagues, pestilence and murdering all who believe in Christ!
If that last post wasn’t enough to stop any Christian from following the faith then nothing will but those who truely believe, also believe in eternal life so I’m sorry you will never know how it feels to accept these facts and simply wait for them to be fulfilled so we can finally say I told you so!
