This is interesting.
From the Australian Financial Review today:
A takeover by social conservatives of the Victorian Liberal Party on the weekend will eventually lead to many state MPs being replaced, party leaders said.
A political faction led by a 28-year-old businessman, Marcus Bastiaan, and its allies secured a majority of positions Saturday on the party’s administrative committee, which oversees the party’s week-by-week operations and can force existing parliamentary candidates to face internal challengers…
…Mr Bastiaan and his allies have spent years building up support in the party through recruiting new and existing members, many of them from churches.
And from The Age six months ago:
Mr Bastiaan has sought to re-energise the party with a vigorous recruitment drive for new members, raising concerns it is being thrust to the hard right.
It is now annual general meeting season for the Liberal Party and Mr Bastiaan’s allies are making their presence felt in meetings across the state.
They’ve already had one success.
The Bastiaan group secured a major victory in the McMillan electorate conference, in Victoria’s east, by ousting the serving chair Mary Aldred and installing their own candidate.
Ms Aldred, considered by some insiders to be a future preselection candidate, lost the chair to local small business owner Anthony Garner.
Mr Garner has railed against same-sex marriage and the recently passed “horrific” voluntary euthanasia laws.
Conservatives are stirring in the Victorian Liberal Party and I will be watching developments with interest. So, it seems, are journalists from the Sydney Morning Herald who probably prefer it when the Liberals act just like the Labor Party…
@4corners I don’t think think I’ve ever seen such a smug little prick as Marcus Bastiaan. Absolutely repulsive arrogance.

With an endorsement like that from a lefty journo the only conclusion that can be reached is that the good guys are winning.
