Bob Katter and Australia’s Catholic bishops must support DLP Senator, John Madigan, who is campaigning against abortion in the lead up to the Federal Election.
The former National General Secretary of Katter’s Australian Party, Bernard Gaynor, says that Mr Katter has a moral obligation to protect life.
“Bob Katter has no choice. It is the right thing to do,” Mr Gaynor said.
“Bob Katter will be asked, one way or the other now, about his position on abortion. Senator Madigan says that there are a small number of MPs who claim to be pro-life but who shy from the issue – I hope Bob is not in that group.”
“As Gillard and Abbott race each other to secure the pro-abortion vote, it makes political sense for Katter to show leadership to the many Australians who want to stop abortion.”
“Senator Madigan has done the courageous thing. The question is whether Bob Katter will be just as courageous and support him in his noble quest to protect life.”
“I will certainly be contacting Senator Madigan today to pass on my support.”
“I also hope the Catholic bishops support Senator Madigan.”
“They must support politicians who make a stand and they have to correct those who claim to be Catholic and fail to live up to Catholic values, like Tony Abbott, who now supports legalised abortion.”
Mr Gaynor also said that it was important to assist women who found themselves in difficult circumstances.
“Any woman considering abortion is in an unhappy place. I would probably consider abortion too, if I was facing career pressures and was abandoned by my partner.”
“However, life is always a better choice than death and it has a right to protected under state laws.”
“Unfortunately, abortions will continue for some time. In the immediate period there should be measures to assist women who find themselves without hope.”
“An ‘Informed Choice’ program would provide women with all the information they need to make an informed decision and to give them hope.”
“This includes all the information about the links between abortion and breast cancer, infertility and mental health issues.”
“It would also provide information on alternatives, including adoption, as well as support and financial assistance available from government and non-government services.”
“An ultra-sound of the baby will not hurt anyone. However, a final decision usually results in a lifetime of grief.”
